Wayne Antrobus Obituary

Oxnard – Wayne Antrobus went home to be with our Lord on Friday, April 16, 2021 at the age of 79. Wayne was born on March 20,1942 in Exeter, New Hampshire. He is the son of the late Leonard Antrobus and Jessie Antrobus (Hyland).

Wayne graduated from Oxnard High school, class of 1960. He continued his education at Ventura College and went on to obtain his BA in Education from Fresno State University. He received his teaching credentials in 1965. He taught in the Rio School District for 42 years, spending 37 years teaching math at Rio Del Valle. In 1989 he had cancer of the larynx. He learned Esophageal speech in 6 months and continued to teach for Rio Del Valle for 16 years after. He was a beloved teacher who won many accolades including Teacher of the Year multiple times.

In 1960, he met the love of his life, Kathy Stallings, whom he married in November 1965. They were married for 55 years and are only separated by Wayne’s passing. He loved his wife Kathy more than any words could express. She was his queen, and he was her king. They had four lovely children.

In his early adulthood he enjoyed backpacking. Over the years he took several youth groups backpacking and he especially enjoyed his annual trip with his good friend, John.  While he was recovering from cancer in 1989, he hand-built an 8-foot crap table with a professional layout including clay chips. He loved craps and taught anyone who wanted to learn the game; he would loan his table to many philanthropic organizations and volunteer his time as the dealer. In his later years, he took up wood-working, making several gifts for his family. He made coffee tables, rocking horses, doll cradles, wine caddies, and a gumball machine. Wayne also enjoyed playing games with his family, his favorite game was cribbage. He has taught his family and friends to play his beloved card game. The family has an annual Cribbage tournament held every year at Christmas, complete with a plaque and bragging rights for a year.

Wayne had a tremendous faith in God and was a long-time member of Westminster Presbyterian church of Hueneme (Wes Pres), joining the church in his high school years and later serving as Sunday School teacher, youth Pastor and Elder. In his most recent years, he regularly attended Calvary Chapel Oxnard. He joined the men’s bible study and made deep connections; he was especially fond of his weekly conversations with Joel during covid.  He was a lifetime member of the Order of Demolay and served on Council for Job’s Daughters when his daughters became eligible.

We will all miss Wayne tremendously but we know he is in a better place with his voice back. He will always be in our hearts and the love that he shared will continue for many generations. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandpa (Papa) and mentor to all who knew him.

Wayne was preceded in death by his beloved parents Leonard Antrobus and Jessie Antrobus (Hyland).

He is survived by his children, Maridee Leyva, Lorraine Antrobus, Rob Antrobus (Partner: Karen), Scott Antrobus (Wife: Renee). Grandchildren: Mundo, Mikki, Haily, Darius, and Drake. Great-Grandchildren: Lorenzo, Brooklyn, Zach, Olivia, and Imani.
