Brodrick “Rick” Dunlap 1962-2026
Brodrick “Rick” Dunlap passed away on April 7, 2026, while surfing off the Channel Islands with friends. He was 64.
Rick was born on March 28, 1962. A fourth-generation Malibuite and ninth-generation Californian, he grew up alongside his sister Anita in the second home built on Carbon Beach, constructed in 1928.
From an early age, he lived life in constant motion — surfing and skateboarding in his youth, and later dirt biking, racing cars, riding jet skis, and taking family and friends on adventures aboard his yellow speedboat, the Schiada Bee in Malibu.
He was a devoted father to his daughters, Cristina and Tiare, coaching each of their soccer teams and sharing his love of the ocean, animals, art, California history, and the Los Angeles Lakers. He was also a beloved grandfather, joining his granddaughter Gia Orlando for trips to the zoo and the train museum and teaching her how to drive the pink toy Jeep he gifted her.
Rick spent nearly 25 years in Malibu real estate, where his deep local knowledge and natural gift for conversation left a lasting impression on clients and colleagues alike. After retiring, he moved to Oxnard, where he pursued his passion for restoring and racing cars, earning first-place finishes at both Willow Springs and Buttonwillow raceways. There, he built a close-knit community of friends, sharing countless boat trips, jet ski rides, bike rides on the beach, and barbecues.
Those who knew Rick remember him as a larger-than-life presence who turned strangers into friends wherever he went. He had an open, generous heart and was always just a phone call away — ready to lend a hand, set off on an adventure, or simply watch the sunset.
Rick is survived by his daughters, Cristina and Tiare Dunlap; his granddaughter, Gia Orlando; and his sister, Anita Dunlap.
A celebration of Rick’s life will be held in Malibu this summer. Details will be posted here when available. For more information, please email rememberingrick28@gmail.com.
Rick will be deeply missed and forever remembered for the love he gave and the joy and laughter he brought to all who knew him.
